Stacked Leather Chair, 2016

Leather, glue
“The Stacked Leather Chair is a part of Fort Standard’s limited edition collection, ‘Qualities of Material,’ which explores natural materials to push them beyond their conventional limits and applications. The collection investigates the properties of wood, stone and leather by employing specific material characteristics to create structural designs in the context of furniture.
Made entirely of leather, this occasional chair comes to life through an experimental process developed by Fort Standard. After soaking for days in diluted wood glue, dozens of layers of leather are placed into a custom mold and pressed with great force to create the thick laminated seat reminiscent of a giant leather shoe heel. Longer hides are rolled into tubes to make the legs and back rest. All of the parts are then cooked in a large oven for several weeks to remove all water weight, drying the parts out completely for assembly.”
